Laptop Technology

Laptops have been around for over 40 years and in that time span, they have changed dramatically. While most of them don’t weigh over 24 lbs, like the Osborne I, or cost over $6500 like the Macintosh portable made by Apple, the market can still be muddy when it comes to choosing the right laptop. That is why we have taken a look at 10 different types of laptops. Some of the laptops we are reviewing and comparing will fall into multiple categories. For example, a laptop might have a 17″ screen, a high-end GPU, and thunderbolt 4 capabilities. So if it is not covered in one category please check another as it might be in it.

We are aware that this is not an all-inclusive comprehensive list of every available type of laptop. However, if you would like to suggest a certain type of laptop for us to review and compare please use the form at the bottom of the page.

Laptops with 2 SSD slots

Storage space is an essential feature for any computer but particularly laptops. Whether for personal or work use running out of places to stash things can be a pain. This is why we looked at laptops with the ability to have 2 SSD’s. You can view our article here:

Laptops with OLED Screens

If you want the best screen you can get on a laptop OLED is the way to go. OLED displays feature awesome image quality with bright colors, fast motion, and very high contrast, all of which enhance your gaming or streaming experience. We have started reviewing and comparing laptops with OLED displays. Even though our process is still ongoing we have a small article started for OLED screens. You can find it here: Laptops with OLED Screens

Laptops with a 17" Screen

In years past the largest laptop screens could top out at 21″ but the norm has become a 17.3″ screen. This has to do primarily with the fact that you can run a USB or HDMI cable to a larger display or use something like chromcast to broadcast your screen to a larger display such as a Smart TV. We have started a small article on laptops with 17″ displays. You can view it here:

Laptops with Extended Battery Life

The use cases for a laptop with extended battery life are numerous. These types of laptops are great for people who use their laptops for work. Our TekResearchers have begun to gather info, review and compare this type of laptop. Although they are still working on this project we have started a small article on the subject, which you can view here: Laptops with extended battery life

Laptops You can DIY repair and upgrade

Before we get into the meat of this subject it should be stated that repairing and upgrading a laptop is a risk. You should be willing to take that risk even if it includes voiding warranties of the laptop as a whole or that of certain components. We can’t decide this for you. Use your smarts.

We’ve taken a look at some of the laptops on the market that make it easy to upgrade and repair. Most notable among these are the Framework Laptops. Framework is addressing one of the major issues of today’s throw-away society by making a laptop that is easy to repair (and upgrade for that matter).

Our TekResearchers have given us the preliminary data on these laptops and we have started a small article. We are awaiting their final results but in the meantime, we could use your help. If you have any experience with or info about these types of laptops we want to hear about it. Just use the form at the bottom of the page. Here is a link to our article: DIY Laptops

Laptops with High-end Graphics Cards

The delight of gamers and graphics designers, laptops with high-end graphics cards are a thing of beauty. Our TekResearchers looked at both AMD and Nvidia laptops. For more on this subject, you can view our article here: Laptops with High-end GPU’s

Laptops powered by a USB-C Cable

We’ve taken a look at some laptops from manufacturers like Samsung and Vaio that use a USB C charging cable instead of the traditional AC power cable. Among these, the Samsung Galaxy Book2 360 and pro 360 stood out.

Our TekResearchers are still reviewing and comparing brands and models that use a USB-C charging cable. However, we have started a small stub article for this subject, which you can find here: High-end Laptops Powered by a USB-C

Laptops with 2 or more Displays

So we’re not talking about just hooking up your laptop to another display and having the same thing on both displays. We’re talking about the cool tech of being able to have two or more separate displays on the same machine.

A great example of this is the ASUS Zenbook Pro DUO 15. This laptop features a 15.6″ UHD 4k OLED with a resolution of 3840×2160 for the main screen and a secondary screen which is dubbed a “Screen Pad™ Plus” which is also a UHD screen that is 14″ (when measured in the standardized diagonal measurement) with a resolution of 3840×1100. Did we mention that the main screen is an OLED screen and that it boasts an Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics card? So it fits into the OLED Screens category and High-end Graphics Cards categories we discussed above.

The ASUS Zenbook Pro DUO 15 is not the only laptop we are reviewing and comparing. There are many more that our TekResearchers are looking into. While they finish up their work you can check out our small article about this subject here: Laptops with 2 or more displays

Laptops with Thunderbolt 4 Capabilities

Thunderbolt™ 4 is the latest gen of Thunderbolt technology from Intel. While still in its infant stages of adoption into laptops and PC’s, many manufacturers are beginning to include this tech in their laptops.

The 4th generation will be backward compatible so if you have devices that work with previous releases you will still be able to use those.

There are a lot of upgrades to Thunderbolt™ 4 that we are comparing and reviewing. In addition to laptops that have included this tech, we are also looking at other things that use the tech such as cables, docking ports, external storage and GPU’s. We will have an article for those items in the near future. But for now, you can take a look at our stub article for laptops with thunderbolt 4 capabilities here: Laptops with Thunderbolt 4 Capabilities

We realize that the article is a work in progress at this point. If you have a laptop with Thunderbolt™ capabilities such as a Lenovo or HP (among others), we would like to hear about your experiences with it. You can give us feedback via the form at the bottom of the page.

Laptops with Tablet Orientation and Stylus Inputs

Our initial thoughts were to provide our community with 2 separate articles. One about laptops with tablet orientation and one about laptops with stylus inputs. However, in the course of our research, we realized that these overlapped to a great extent.

Our TekResearchers are still reviewing brands like Lenovo, HP, Samsung, Asus, and others so that we can bring you a spectacular article on this subject.

We have begun to compile our research and have started a small article that honestly could use some help via community feedback. You can find our article here: Laptops with Tablet Orientation and Stylus Inputs
